Choosing a Training and Development Program
There are a variety of ways to learn or improve your existing skills through training and development. This area of learning is very broad, so it pays to know what you want in order to avoid being confused and overwhelmed with the wide variety of choices that are available.
Here’s a look at some of the different training and development techniques which you can check out.
Training Simulations
Designed to simulate the conditions and environment in the real world, training simulations are a fast and efficient method of acquiring new knowledge and skills for a specific application. This training and development program is particularly useful for individuals looking to operate machinery and various types of sophisticated equipment. The goal behind simulations is to make the trainee believe that he, or she, is operating under real world conditions without fear of repercussions from technical errors. Simulations are also great for condition trainees to respond to specific situations.
On-the-job (OJT) Training and Seminars
On-the-job training is by far the most frequently-used training and development program, and is usually paired with seminars and lectures as the trainee begins to learn the ropes. Although there’s little evidence on the effectiveness of on-the-job training, many people still prefer to take this route due to its tried and tested nature. Bear in mind though that on-the-job training must be paired with classroom-based lectures or at the very least, something similar to its atmosphere. This is the best way for you to learn as you work your way to the top.
The downside to most on-the-job training programs is that mentors will often have limited time to personally train you, so you definitely need to have the initiative and will to learn if you want to take this path.
Audiovisual Learning
Although film and television are often considered as platforms for entertainment, they are also effective at teaching and spreading information in a way that’s conducive to learning. The hit kids’ show Sesame Street is the perfect testament to this fact. For decades, the series has taught children all over the world the basics of the alphabet and math in a child-friendly and entertaining manner. Both film and television offer distinct advantages because they immerse viewers in a complete audio and visual experience.
These are just some of the training and development techniques which are readily available, depending on your needs. Good luck picking a training and development program!
